India has been home to many great art forms and one of such goes by the name of Calico. Calico art’s origin can be dated back to 11th century in Southern part of India. Place of Calicut is credited with providing the art form with its name, which is essentially British when it comes to pronouncing it. It is basically done in print form mostly on a piece of cloth also known as muslin. Practiced all across the country back in the day, calico prints were very much in demand during British rule as most of the production was exported to European countries for sale. The collaboration between calico printing and cotton spinning was further elaborated during the British rule in India. Thus, calico art gained momentum during the late 17th century with prints being influenced by Persian style of art, giving the art works a unique form of its own.
